Way Back Wednesday

Today’s lesson

CT Skatepark history. 1st opened in the spring of 1977. “Rock Park” was located at exit #17 off RT2 in Colchester. It was an outdoor concrete park consisting of two snake runs that dropped into two deep back to back bowls. There was a large banked “freestyle” area. A small cinderblock building served as the office and “Pro shop”. The concrete surfaces were horribly rough. Which was ironic because as I recall the park was designed and poured by a gentleman who owned a concrete company! Maybe he was better at pouring foundations. The skatepark was only in business for about two years. Many of Connecticut’s pioneering skaters learned to ride concrete at this park. I can remember weekend rides with the six of us in a friends station wagon with skateboard equipment piled in the back. Tommy Owens, the Fanciullo bros, Nick Pedemonti and myself. The founding members of the “Wheelin Free Skateboard Team” But I’ll save that for next week. I stopped at the old location of “Rock Park” last week and took a picture of the site. Today it’s just a pile of sand with some big rocks around the perimeter. It’s now bordered by a Christmas tree farm. You can see it when you are traveling east on Rt. 2, off on the left side of the highway at exit 17........ Craig Pedemonti

Tyrant

Tony Tyrant sent me this pic from the lot in Middletown after he ate alittle dirt. Tony and his crew are heavy into the BMX world he takes photos for the shop and a few of Tyrant's riders are on the CE team. Tony and others are in the process of reforming jumps and getting new lines dialed for the Dirt Jam that we will be hosting along with Tyrant soon.  Check out Tony and Tyrant at http://www.tyrantbmx.blogspot.com/

Reb Bull Manny Mania

This Year Red Bull did their Manny Mania contest at the famous street spot in Hartford called "Heaven". It was a very hot day but nothing was as hot as the skating that was being done by everyone. I saw alot of crazy skating yesterday. Zack from the CE skate team entered the comp. and I saw him do some cool variations of tailslides to switch manny and  frontnose to fakie manny. Red Bull had the wildest truck there and the back half of it poped up and turned into a dj booth. Our good friends from Hartford Hardcore were putting up some paint on what will soon be known as Heaven's new urban art wall. Nate Jackson took the win, next stop Woodward Pa. to compete and if he wins that on to the world finals.

Wednesday Night Ride

Here are a few pictures from our Wednesday night ride this week. We all met up at the shop a little earlier this week and headed out to Colchester for a wild ride. We had a great group of guys riding with us this week. The terrain over there is great fast/hard pack/rocky/with some rolling hills. Lots of forks in the trails so you really need to know where your going or pay very close attention or you might get lost like some people I know. Our rides are every Wednesday weather pending in a different location every week. Let us know if you would like to join us for a ride and we'll include you on our ride email list and let you know where we will be going every week.

Just picked up this game watched the intro and thought it was great. With the rain coming tonight chances are I'll still be skating just not outside.

Skate-A-Palooza

Rick and I went over to the Glastonbury skate park this past Saturday for Skate-A-Palooza witch is an annual contest that goes on at the park hosted by Hoodlum Skateboards The CuttingEdge and the Glastonbury Park and Rec. department. I had to judge the event with John from HDLM and it was pretty tough. A lot of kids ended up entering this year. First place went to a local skater Jared who had landed just about every trick he tried and very close behind him was David who was matching up with him so we needed a tiebreaker. Jared stomped a lot of tricks off the side of the bank ramp to win it. Thanks to everyone who helped out and showed up to check this event out. Ryan

From Milford to Maloof

Got a chance to go down to Queens NY on sunday to check out the Maloof Money Cup with John Cassandra of Hoodlum Skateboard co. And Andrew of Skateors mentoring. It was definatly a crazy long day that was packed full of sick skating. Largest cash prize ever  given away at a skateboard event, 100,000 that ended up going home with Chris Cole of the Zero team. 2nd went to P-Rod and third went to Torrey Pudwell. We left out of Milford around 9am and ended up getting to Flushing Meadows around Noon. Got there right on time to watch the Am. finals and time to find a solid seat on the bleachers. The weather ened up holding out right untill the final round was done then it downpoured.  The three of us ended up hiding under a tree for a bit and when it slowed down we made a dash for the subway station and started our voyage home. All in all amazing day with good people.Ryan
